Scenes from Grid Computing

Participants

UT Grid is a joint project of The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) and IBM. UT Austin has developed an institutional commitment towards establishing leadership in terascale distributed computing for research and education; IBM is the leading technology company for developing and providing grid computing services.

The project is led by the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at UT Austin. TACC has initiated several new grid computing research, development, and deployment activities since 2001, with both campus and national partnerships and collaborations. TACC leads the development of the GridPort and GridShell projects, and are active in the deployment of the NSF TeraGrid and the new Texas Internet Grid for Research and Education (TIGRE). The UT Grid project will use GridPort and GridShell, and will enable leveraging of efforts and results, and eventually integration, between UT Grid, TeraGrid and TIGRE.

The TACC project leadership for UT Grid includes:
Project Director: Jay Boisseau boisseau@tacc.utexas.edu
Project Manager: Maytal Dahan maytal@tacc.utexas.edu
Chief Technologist: Edward Walker ewalker@tacc.utexas.edu
IBM Grid Computing experts are working closely with TACC staff on the UT Grid project to ensure its success. IBM consultants are contributing to the design, development, and implementation of UT Grid following the IBM Global Services (IGS) Method during the project. They are providing an array of skills including project management, architecture, solution design and development. The IBM experience with customer sites will benefit the transition of UT Grid to an operational infrastructure. The IBM consultants on the project provide direct access to the tremendous expertise and resources in grid computing within IBM.

Other units of UT Austin participating in the UT Grid development and deployment activities are:
Center for Instructional Technology
College of Engineering
Information Technology Services
Institute for Computational Engineering & Sciences
Department of Computer Sciences
Additional technology companies contributing hardware, software and/or support that benefit UT Grid include:
United Devices
Platform Computing
Sun
Microsoft
Dell
